Ever wonder how some blogs or articles are displayed with an author’s profile picture on a Google search? This is very easy to do and adds a bit of an eye grabber towards your website when listed with numerous others within any Google search results. If you are a blogger or online author of any kind, it could be very beneficial for you to add a profile picture along side your Google listings.
One thing to keep in mind however, is that the picture must be of a face. Google uses face detection for these profile pictures to make sure that they are displaying pictures of a person’s face only. Logos and other images will not be allowed, so you can forget adding an animated GIF or anything like that to Google’s listings.
Images are proven to attract more visitors to any given webpage as they stand out from ordinary text.
How to Add a Picture to Google Results
- If you haven’t already, register a Google Plus account here.
- On the left hand side go to Profile and then click the camera icon for Change profile photo.
- Upload a profile picture here.
- Add a link to your website on your Google Plus account by clicking the Link button.
- Insert your Google Plus page into your website’s <head> tag like so:
<link rel="author" href="https://plus.google.com/117942499861385702431/" />
Make sure you change the URL to your own Google Plus page.
You can get the URL to your Google Plus page by clicking Profile and going to your profile page. The URL in your browser will read like so:
Finally, you want to make sure that your +1’s are public. Go to your Google account settings and on the left side click Google+. Then scroll all the way down until you find the Profile header with some check mark options below. See the screenshot below for a visual. Make sure the box for +1 is checked so that your +1’s are shown on your profile.
All done, enjoy!
** Be sure to allow time for Google to cache your new author profile pic to your posts. This may take 24-48 hours so do not be surprised if your picture does not appear right away.
